JAX

Something smashes against the floor, jolting me awake. Vila stands beside me, a smug grin on her face. “Time to get up, sunshine. Dawn’s the best time to travel.”

I sit up, disoriented, and plant my boots in a pile of shattered glass. “Why?”

“Not too hot, and we can see the Ghosts better.” She swigs from an open bottle in her hand. “Of course, they can see us better, too.” She tips the bottle back again, and with a chuckle, finishes it off, tossing it across the room.

“You really enjoy breaking stuff, don’t you?”

She shrugs. “What can I say, I’m a creative soul. Mom used to tell me that all the time when I was little.”

“Creative? You mean destructive?”

“Same thing.”

“Uh, no, it’s not.”

“Sure it is. Destroying something only changes it to something else—recreating. And you may not find a pile of glass beautiful, but I do.”

“Now you’re just being crazy.”

She puts her hands on her hips, cocks her head. “Are you telling me you don’t see the beauty in broken pieces? In something fragile being shattered, never to be whole again? I mean, I admit the majority of the beauty is in hindsight, but still—”

“Did I miss something? When did you become a damn intellectual guru?”

“I’ve had a lot of time to think.” She picks up a gun from the bar, tosses it to me. “Now come on, it’ll be hot as Hades soon. Let’s get moving.” She straps her bag onto her back, and with a brush of my cheek, she heads to the front door.

With a sigh, I follow, collecting my own bag from where I left it last night. Or rather, five minutes ago when I “fell asleep.” Weird.

Seraphim?

Yes, I’m here. I was waiting for you to finish your conversation. I didn’t want to interrupt.

You have everything ready for when I get out of here?

It has literally been fifteen minutes since I last talked to you.

Oh … right.

Vila opens the door, and we exit the building into the early morning sun that peeks through the cracks of fallen debris, already warm.

But I have a team working on that as we speak, Seraphim adds. As soon as they find a way to follow through with your plan, I’ll notify you. We’ll have to get you out, get you to Vila, get Vila to a secret transport harbor to here, and then get you back in your cell without being seen. To say this is a great challenge would be an understatement.

I trust you. You can do this. And I’m guessing I’m going back to my cell, so as not to cause too much upheaval too early?

Correct. We cannot put our plan into action until Joy and Smudge have completed their parts of the mission. This will be about another thirty-six to forty-eight hours. And when it’s time, you’ll need to be in position to apprehend the Key and the book. But Jax, I wanted to run something by you first, and you tell me what you think.

Shoot.

I was thinking
